Lightyear: Everything you need to know about the Toy Story spin-off before watching

Toy Story, arguably one of the most memorable animated franchises out there, is getting an all-new addition in the form of a spin-off. It has been decades since the original movie directed by that arrived in 1995 and four films into the franchise, it still sparks nostalgia. Cashing in on some of that nostalgia is Pixar’s latest spin-off film, Lightyear. Featuring a star-studded voice cast led by Chris Evans, the film takes us back in time with an origin story. As Lightyear arrives in theatres this Friday, here's everything you need to know about the film:
What is the plot of Lightyear?

Toy Story follows Buzz Lightyear, Woody and other toys owned by young Andy. Lightyear is an animated sci-fi adventure that reveals the movie Andy watched before he got the action figure and fell in love with him. The film is billed as the "definitive origin story" for Buzz and a prequel to the Toy Story films. It revolves around the ranger who finds himself marooned on a dangerous planet with his crew. He then embarks on a mission to achieve hyperspeed and leave the planet. Along the way, the film introduces new characters to the franchise.
Who's who in Lightyear?
Does the film feature Woody, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, Little Bo-Peep and co.? Well, nope. Lightyear brings fresh names and voice actors to the franchise while retaining references that Toy Story fans will instantly recognise. Voicing Buzz Lightyear is actor Chris Evans who is best known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Captain America. While Tim Allen voiced the character in all four Toy Story movies, Evans was cast as the space ranger in an unexpected move. In the film, Buzz is thrown together with a motley crew of rookies who will join him on his mission. The crew of wannabe space rangers comprises - Izzy Hawthrone (voiced by Keke Palmer), the granddaughter of Buzz's best friend Alisha (voiced by Uzo Aduba). Buzz's most important companion is Sox (voiced by Peter Sohn), a robot cat who can play sleep sounds, among other things. The crew also includes Mo Morrison (voiced by Taika Waititi) a rookie ranger prone to quitting at the slightest inconvenience and Darby Steel (Dale Soules), an elderly trigger-happy ranger trainee.

The film's big bad is Zurg who fans will remember as the nemesis of Buzz Lightyear. Emperor Zurg is voiced by James Brolin in the film. One of the biggest questions going to Lightyear is whether or not Zurg will turn out to be Buzz's father and it looks like the film is poised to unravel Zurg's backstory as well.
Lightyear is directed by Angus MacLane and arrives in cinemas on June 17.  More on: Lightyear, Lightyear
