Raja Hindustani (1996)

Director: Dharmesh Darshan

Cast: Aamir Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Suresh Oberoi

Box-office collections: Rs. 43.15 crore

Along with being Karisma Kapoor’s biggest hit, Raja Hindustani was also one of the highest box office grossers of the year 1996. Such was its popularity that people started referring to Karisma as Rani Hindustani. The film was inspired by Shashi Kapoor-Nanda starrer Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965). Aamir, as usual, aced his portrayal of Raja, a taxi driver from a small town who falls in love with a rich girl named Aarti (Karisma Kapoor). While the storyline of the film is pretty melodramatic, it does make for a fun experience thanks to some brilliant songs and inspired acting by the two leads. All in all, Raja Hindustani makes for a fun masala film which hasn’t lost its appeal even today.

Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999)

Director: Sooraj R. Barjatya

Cast: Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Mohnish Bahl

Box-office collections: Rs. 39.17 crore

With Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya continued milking his formula of Indian family dramas. His earlier ventures, Maine Pyar Kiya, as well as Hum Aapke Hain Koun, turned out to be massive hits so it made complete sense to stick to what was working. Hum Saath Saath Hai is a simple family drama. It's one of the films you enjoy most when watching with family. It's a colourful feel-good film and not one that will make you seriously pick your brains. The moral of the story is that family should stick together, that's when they're the strongest. Karisma Kapoor along with the rest of the cast puts up a decent performance which was a crucial factor for the love received by the film.

Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

Director: Yash Chopra

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit

Box-office collections: 34.97

Whether it is playful Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, graceful Madhuri Dixit as Pooja or bubbly Karisma Kapoor as Nisha, each and every character is etched in our memories. This was one of the first musicals which was produced in Bollywood. The film helped Karisma win a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. In an interview with a leading daily, the actress stated, “Dil To Pagal Hai was a risk, considering most actresses refused to do the role. I took it up when Madhuri's success was at its peak. I have always taken risks. When I joined this industry, I wanted to make it. I wanted to prove myself as an actress and be at the top. I am sure everybody dreams of reaching a certain height. Thankfully, it happened to me. My hard work paid off with Raja Hindustani. I wanted to win an award and I got one. Then I got the National Award for DTPH. I feel I have achieved what I wanted to. Today people think since I have four hits like Biwi No 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Hum Saath-Saath Hain and even Jaanwar to my credit, what else could I want? I feel that all this is an added bonus for me. It's like the icing on the cake. I have proved myself over the years. With me, it’s never been that I gave a hit and I have become the rage like it’s happening these days.”

Biwi No.1 (1999)

Director: David Dhawan

Cast: Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen and Anil Kapoor

Box-office collections: 25.58

The film was a moralistic tale revolving around infidelity. Rupali (Sushmita Sen), who is a tall, leggy model with an aspiring future, meets her dream man in Prem Mehra (Salman Khan) and both are instantly attracted to each other. Prem even signs her for his agency and they head together for a shoot to Switzerland. When they return, Rupali finds out that Prem isn’t the bachelor he claims to be but is married and is the father of two children. Obviously, she asks him to divorce his wife Pooja (Karisma Kapoor) if he wants to have a future with her. The problems start when Pooja finds out about her husband's infidelity and the real war begins. At first, she is unable to do anything but later with the help of a close family friend named Lakhan she decides to fight for her family and get her husband back. The film belongs to Karisma Kapoor as she’s wonderful in her portrayal of the Indian wife who fights to win her husband back and also teaches him a lesson while she’s at it. Karisma delivers a performance that is both convincing and funny and something which the masses related to as well.
