BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — The family of Coit Herrick II returned to the spot where he slipped and fatally fell at Jump Creek Canyon Monday afternoon.
The 20-year-old was hiking with some friends when he fell 70 feet off a cliff and died shortly after.
"He had the biggest smile on his face even if it was a terrible day," said Coit Herrick II's father, Coit Herrick.
"Some things he had with him that are still missing and we came out to retrieve those items," said Valerie Grasch, Coit's aunt.
His father says Coit landed in the creek. In memory of him, they wrote "rest in peace" on a nearby rock.
"He went way too young but it was what he loved," his father said.
He worked construction by trade and loved ones describe Coit as athletic, adventurous and charming.
"He loved wrestling for his high school, he was third in state," his father said. "Snowboarding, motorcycle and mountain biking; he was adventurous."
"He lit up a room, any room that he would go into," Grasch said. "His infectious smile with his dimples. It was just the spotlight of the room."
The family wants to thank everyone for all of the support in this difficult time.
"He really touched a lot of people - and it's apparent through the messages and phone calls," Grasch said. "And the family can't thank everybody enough for that."
There will be a candlelight vigil for Coit at Middleton High School Wednesday at 8 p.m.
