A Lahaina fire photo that first ran on the front page of The Maui News on Aug. 9, is included on the cover of Time magazine’s recently released The Year in Review special edition. The photo of the fully engulfed Waiola Church Hall and Lahaina Hongwanji Mission was taken by staff photographer Matthew Thayer on Aug. 8 and has become an iconic image of the devastating wildfires that claimed at least 100 lives and destroyed more than 2,200 structures in Lahaina. Inside the special edition, the photo runs across pages 4 and 5 to kick off the review of 2023. The photo was also included in Time’s Top 100 Photos of 2023, and The Atlantic magazine’s Top 25 Photos of 2023.
