Andrew Gillum is an American politician, Mayor of Tallahassee, Florida, and a member of the Democratic party. As a Democrat, he ran for Governor of Florida in the 2018 election. He served as a member of the Tallahassee City Commission from 2003 to 2014. Andrew Demese Gillum was born on July 26, 1979, in Miami, Florida. He has 6 siblings. Gillum was elected to the Tallahassee City Commission in 2003. He was only 23 at the time, making him the city’s youngest commissioner. His first term was valid for one year. In 2014, Gillum earned his first full term (4-year) after receiving 72% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2008 and 2012. During his stay, Gillum spent a year as Mayor Pro Tem (2004-05) and a year as chairperson of the Capital Region Transportation Planning Agency (2005). He worked on projects such as the Digital Harmony, The Palmer Munroe Center, and the development of the Cascades Park in downtown Tallahassee. In 2009, he became National Director of the Youth Leadership Programs with the People for the American Way Foundation. Gillum served as a member of the Tallahassee City Commission from February 2003 to November 2014. He was succeeded by Curtis B. Richardson.
In 2014, Gillum succeeded John Marks as the Mayor of the city of Tallahassee, Florida. His opponents were Zach Richardson, Evin Matthews, and Larry Hendricks. He was sworn into office on November 21, 2014. Gillum has been described as progressive with regards to his stance on topics like Medicare, immigration, and gun control. He’s drawn comparison to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. In 2018, Gillum ran for Governor of Florida on the Democratic ticket. He made history as Florida’s first black nominee from a major party.
