Phasmophobia's equipment changes and updates are coming, so here's what to expect.
First Published May 13, 2023, 09:53
Equipment upgrades and changes will be a major part of the next Phasmophobia update, and Kinetic Games has explained in more detail how they'll work in the most recent development update. Players will be able to get brand-new types of ghost-hunting tools, as well as check out updates to existing ones - including the Thermometer, EMF Reader, and more - and level them up to hunt ghosts even more efficiently.
With such major changes coming to the game, both beginners and veterans might be a little confused about how they work. In this guide, we'll walk you through how the new Phasmophobia equipment changes work, including the equipment tiers.
Phasmophobia Equipment Changes: Tiers I, II, & III
Following Phasmophobia's upcoming progression update there will be three tiers of Equipment: Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III. As you'd imagine, the effectiveness - and ease of use - of each tool increases as the tiers do. Developer Kinetic Games has already showcased the upcoming changes to the D.O.T.S. Projector, Thermometer, and EMF Reader in recent development updates.
Since everyone will be set back to level 1 during the level reset and progression update, all players will start out again after the update with Tier I tools. After playing through matches with those tools, leveling up, and progressing, players can pay for the updates and increase the tier level of their tools.
That said, upgrades are entirely optional; you can spend your money however you like, or not even spend it at all. Depending on which tools you use more often, you may want to spend your money accordingly. For example,, you can easily have a Tier I Thermometer while also having a Tier III D.O.T.S Projector in your toolbox. Once you reach level 20, you'll be able to upgrade a tool to the next tier.
Note that each player can bring a different Tier of items, but any given player cannot bring multiple Tiers of the same equipment; this means when playing with friends, you'll need to coordinate accordingly. This will also add an interesting element of collaboration to team play.
Phasmophobia's changes to equipment tiers are coming relatively soon, and now you know exactly what to expect when they go live. Every piece of equipment in the game will have three distinct tiers, and players can level up their tools by playing the game and spending their money wisely. It's likely we'll hear more in another development update from Kinetic Games soon, so stay tuned!
