New Delhi: Osteogenesis imperfecta or brittle bone disorder is an inherited genetic disorder that causes weak bones that are prone to breaking, loose joints, and many other complications and symptoms. You must have come across this condition through Brick Heck on the infamous sitcom, The Middle. The severity of this disease can range from mild to severe and can even be life-threatening in some cases. Osteogenesis imperfecta is caused by a disorder of a gene that produces type 1 collagen, which is a protein used to make bones.

Osteogenesis imperfecta - Signs and symptoms

Some early symptoms of osteogenesis imperfecta are:

  • Bone deformities: The primary effect of this disease causes weak and deformed bone structure.
  • Blue sclerae: A blue-ish tint on the whites of the eyes can be a sign of osteogenesis imperfecta.
  • Kyphosis: Also known as a hunchback, an abnormal outward curve of the upper spine can be a symptom
  • Scoliosis: This is a form of irregular spine shape.
  • Broken bones and loose joints: Due to weak bones, they may break easily and joints might also get loose.
  • Other symptoms may include early hearing loss, respiratory problems, and cardiovascular issues.

    There is no cure for osteogenesis imperfecta but once diagnosed, treatment is available to help manage its symptoms. Some methods of treatment may include:
